Reading a score

Back to the guide

Open a deal from the Screener list by selecting its row.

What is on the page

The score and its band, with the rationale underneath in plain language.

The factor breakdown, one bar per factor, showing what each contributed. This is where a surprising total is explained. A deal that scored lower than you expected usually lost its points in one place, and the bars show which.

The extracted figures — revenue, earnings, addbacks, customer concentration, employees, asking price — each with the quote it came from. Select a citation to jump to that page in the document, so you can check any number against the book in two clicks.

The readiness verdict, Look, Wait or Pass, with the completeness checklist beneath it.

The buy box version that produced the score.

Checking a number you doubt

Do not take the figures on trust. They were read out of a document, and documents are inconsistent about what they call things.

Select the citation next to the figure. The viewer opens at the page it came from, with the quote shown. Decide for yourself whether it was read correctly.

Figures worth checking first:

  • Earnings, where adjusted EBITDA and seller's discretionary earnings are sometimes used interchangeably by the seller
  • Addbacks, which vary from reasonable to imaginative
  • Customer concentration, often stated for the top customer in one place and the top five in another

Correcting the completeness checklist

If the checklist says something is missing and you can see that it is not, confirm the item and the deal is rescored.

This is not only a correction for that deal. It is feedback, and corrections are recorded, so the pattern of what gets corrected is visible over time.

Viewers cannot confirm items.

Re-evaluating

Re-evaluate reads and scores the deal again from scratch, against the current buy box.

Worth doing when:

  • You have changed the buy box and want this deal measured against the new one
  • A deal failed to read the first time
  • You uploaded it as the wrong kind

A CIM can take a few minutes. You do not need to stay on the page.

What you cannot change

  • The score itself. It is arithmetic over the extracted figures and your weights. To change it, fix the figures or the rules.
  • The buy box from here. That lives under Settings → Scoring rules.
  • Deletion. Deleting a deal removes its documents and cannot be undone.
